Linoluna: Magazine-style Theme for Wordpress

Bored of usual Wordpress template? Well, magazine-style themes is now becoming a trend. With Linoluna, you will be brought to a new level of blogging. It is a simple and neat theme for a magazine-styled blog. The theme use the Wordpress’ template tags quite extensively but still, it is very easy to use. Linoluna best suits a multi-author Wordpress blog.

The CSS is lean and the design is very simple. Basically it is a grid-styled layout with green accents. The theme uses a tabbed navigation to show the most popular posts. There are four tabs avaiable and by default it is “Viewed”, “Commented”, “Top Rated”, and “Emailed”. There is a slideshow animation for the featured articles in the front page. It is a simple JavaScript from JQuery.com.

You can see the statistics of each page in a rectangular box inside every post. I include some fresh icons to make everything look better. The statistics includes the total comments, total views, author name, category, date, and the email and print function. For the best functionality, you should have the plugin WP-PostView, WP-PostRating, WP-Print, WP-Email installed. Those plugins are from LesterChan.net.

Installation

  1. Download and extract the zip file.
  2. Upload the theme file to your server at “/wp-content/themes/” folder.
  3. Activate the theme. (Admin Panel -> Presentation -> Themes)

Configuration

  1. Linoluna is built to support WP version 2.0 and up.
  2. The theme is sidebar widget-ready. By default, the sidebar is divided into four sections. Sidebar-Top, Sidebar-Left, Sidebar-Right, and Sidebar-Bottom. Each sidebar can be configured in the WP Admin Panel (Presentation -> Widgets). So it will be only clicks-and-drags.
  3. In the index.php file you will find some PHP code like:
    <?php query_posts('showposts=1&cat=10'); ?>
The $cat variable refers to the respective category_ID. You can see the category ID from the WP Admin Panel. (Manage -> Categories) The $showpost variable refer to the number of posts you want to show.
  4. Images across the theme can be configured using the Custom Fields. You should add a custom field called “Image” in every post and put the image filename within the custom field value. Each post is attached with several images (but the same filename) that will be shown according to its proper places. The “Banner” image will be shown at the top of every post (below the title), the “Slideshow” image will be shown in the slideshow, the “Asides” image will be shown in the “Aside” section, and the “Thumbnail” images will be shown in the archive and author pages. I repeat, all images should be named the same for each post. (e.g Custom field name: Image; Custom field value: pool.jpg)
  5. The layout will also work with different image sizes of your likings but I think it’ll be better if at first you try everything using the default sizes. The slideshow images are 400×300pixels, the Asides images are 200×130pixels, and the Thumbnails are 75×75pixels.
  6. There is a dedicated author page that show the author biography, his/her photo, and his/her publications. The author photos should be named after the author’s last name. And it must be a JPG file. (eg. Hutagalung.jpg)
  7. An ad banner (468×60px) is shown in the post pages between the post entry and the comments. An ad square banner (300×250px) is shown in the sidebar.
  8. This is the folder structure of the theme folders:
    • Main folder (index.php, single.php, author.php, style.css, etc.)
    • Images->Ads (put the advertisements here)
    • Images->Banner (put the banner images here)
    • Images->Asides (put the aside images here)
    • Images->Slideshow (put the slideshow images here)
    • Images->Thumbnail (put the thumbnails images here)
    • Images->Author (put the author photos here)

Download the theme (ZIP File).
This file has been downloaded 33743 times.

Anyway this is the very first theme that I made and I really want to hear any of your comments and suggestions.

Changelog
V1.1 Some PHP code correction. Linoluna now works well for blogs that are not installed on the root folder. (e.g http://www.yourdomain.com/blog)

If you have any problem using the theme and want to ask for support, please use the forum instead.

I am still confused to use linoluna… how to set up this..

  • John says:

Wow, excellent! This might be waht I have been looking for for such a loooong time. You have made a wonderful piece of work!!

But, is it possible to have a kind of folder/subject navigation in the top of this theme?

  • Tom says:

    Michael,

This is a fantastically lightweight yet elegant theme.

The one problem I’m having is replacing the text logo with a graphical logo and adding a background image (a small tiling GIF) to the site. When I enter the code for the images in the CSS file, nothing shows up.

I know I’m getting the path to the images correct. What’s happening? Thanks.

This is by far the best out of the new magazine themes…great job!

  • a really great theme you have here, michael!
    i like it.

  • michaeljubel says:

thanks, ydoea.. gak susah kok.. pasti lo bisa kali.. tapi emang time-consuming.. hehe..

and, nora, i wonder why your comments are always caught as spam comments by Akismet.. :D anyway, are you trying to exclude one category in the popular lists? i’m afraid you cannot do that because the lists is made by the LesterChan’s plugin. but, for the rest of the lists, you can try to put this line..

    <?php if (in_category('31')) continue; ?>

replace ‘31′ with the category-ID you want to exclude..

  • Nora says:

Michael, I’m trying to get ‘mostpopWidget’ to exclude one of the categories… any ideas?

  • ydoea says:

    wow,
so you’ve finally made your very own theme eh?
great work bel. truly great work indeed.

*masih dalam tahap mengutak-atik desain, kapan ya theme gua jadi…*

  • Nora says:

    Finally, I’ve fixed everything…

  • Nora says:

well, since my last comment here things have changed… I have upgraded to wp 2.3.3 and now the widgets are working but now in the wp-admin I don’t see 4 sidebar containers but only one… ?

  • michaeljubel says:

thanks a lot, faye and Gök Ekin.. i hope the theme is useful! :D

and, sgüzelcik, i’m now working on my new theme “Arthemia” and it will probably have three lists in the footer. just wait! :D

nora, can you tell me your web site address? and have you uploaded all the sidebar files?

  • Nora says:

Ok, I figured the pictures but now I have another problem… I can not make the sidebar work. I’ve installed the widgets and plug-ins, and sidebar is working with other themes, but not with this one… no matter what I save under widgets options the only thing appearing in the sidebar is tabbed navigation…I’m running wordpress 2.1…. Any ideas?

  • Nora says:

    Michael,

I don’t really get this thing with images, could you explain it in more details?

  • Nora says:

Michael, could you explain the part about the pictures more closely…I’ve tried everything and still can not get the pictures to show in proper places except the ones I insert into the posts themselves…

  • sgüzelcik says:

Nice theme. I will use that in my news-magazine site. I think new feature must be “footer bar”. There should be a footer at the bottom of page and two or three unordered list can be replaced there. Is it possible ?
    Thanks for this amazing theme.

  • Gök Ekin says:

Amazing magazine style Wp theme! Thanks a lot.

  • Faye says:

i just absolutely love this theme! Definitely will use it. I’ve been looking for one that is free and widget ready :D and you have both!! so I thank you michael

  • michaeljubel says:

    thx for your comment, Len!

and clay, i don’t know whether the theme works for WP MU or not because i never use WP MU before.. but i guess if WP MU is using the standard for WP 2.0 and up, it’ll be fine..

anyway, i’m working on my new theme: Arthemia.. soon!

  • Clay Burell says:

Great looking theme. A student of mine wants to run it on WPMU, which only I have admin access to. Does is work on WPMU 1.1?

  • Len says:

Found my way here through a series of links beginning at the WordPress support forums. :) Can’t believe you’re giving this theme away. It’s just as good as Gardner’s News Revolution theme!

  • michaeljubel says:

christin, merry christmas and happy new year too..

Thanks, Nat! I hope my explanation is easy enough to understand.. anyway, whatever you see in the sidebar may be edited through WP Admin Panel except for the tabbed-navigation and the ads.

And about the images, don’t forget to put every images in proper folders (Banner, Aside, etc). Don’t forget to fill the value in the Custom Fields too..

    • Hi

      great theme! Thanks a lot!

Just one question. I do not want to put the images on my server, rather I want to use services like picasa and flickr. How can I now use Banner, thumbnail and slideshows?

      regards

      Bharat

  • music says:

    very interesting.
    i’m adding in RSS Reader

  • Nat says:

WOW! The Linoluna theme looks great! My favorite out of the new magazine themes. Clean look and good display of content. I’m trying to get it to work with my blog. I’ve run into a few problems so far with getting images to show up properly. I’m going to keep working on it, and see if I can solve the problem. Perhaps I’m missing something. Thanks! Excellent job on the design and functionality!

  • christin says:

wah, template website nya langsung ganti.
